In many ways, Dan Gurney has left the biggest legacy to F1 out of all Americans.
Racing mainly in the 60s, he competed and enjoyed great success not only in F1, but also in Nascar, Indycar, Can-Am and Trans-Am.
The Gurney flap is an aerodynamic device that was named after he first used it, and is still used in today’s modern F1 cars riddled with aero devices.
Gurney was also the first to celebrate with champagne on the podium which was purely a spontaneous moment but one that is now seen in all forms of motorsport.
